Private Prison Legislation Introduced in House.

On Thursday, November 10, 2011, Jon Bumstead (R-Newaygo), introduced HB 5174 which would allow the Department of Corrections to contract with the GEO group who owns the empty “punk prison” in Lake County it if it would result in an annual cost savings of at least 5 percent.

As we all know, the GEO Group has spent that last few years spending millions to renovate the facility and increase its bed space and had a contract in place with California until they balked.

Specifics of the proposal would include an initial five year term, a requirement that those hired share the same certification as current DOC Corrections Officers and establish a yearly report on how the facility was operating.

The bill sponsor predicts the facility would employ up to 550 people and house just over 1.700 inmates.
