About 85 people stopped by a picket Wednesday in Sault Ste. Marie to raise awareness of prison staffing cuts.
MCO chapter leaders at Chippewa Correctional Facility organized the event. At Chippewa, only one gun tower remains operational, and only for eight hours a day.
Perimeter Security Vehicles have been eliminated. MCO believes these cuts endanger prisons and communities.
Many of the participants at Wednesday’s picket were Chippewa and Kinross corrections officers concerned for their safety. They waived signs with messages including, “perimeter security =
public safety” and “honk for safe prisons.”
