Violent Altercations Plague an Overstretched System 8/29/25
Between mid-July and late August 2025, Michigan’s correctional facilities experienced a troubling series of violent incidents involving both prisoners and staff. From assaults during routine escorts to large-scale fights and weapon discoveries, these events reflect the volatile and high-risk environment corrections officers navigate daily.
The frequency and severity of these altercations—spitting, striking, biting, and even stabbing—underscore the persistent challenges of maintaining safety, order, and staff well-being within an overstretched system. This report documents these incidents, offering insight into the physical and psychological toll on personnel and raising urgent questions about the staffing crisis and the dangers associated with improper placement of prisoners in security levels.
Charles E. Egeler Reception & Guidance Center (RGC)
In July 2025, RGC had 1,128 overtime shifts, 495 mandatory overtime shifts, 627 closed assignments, 50 32-hour rule violations, and 6 16-hour violations.
Ionia Correctional Facility (ICF)
July 17, 2025- A prisoner spit on an officer.
July 21, 2025- A prisoner struck an officer in the head with his fist.
August 5, 2025- While gaining control of a disruptive prisoner, an officer hit his knee. The officer was sent to the hospital for evaluation.
Chippewa Correctional Facility (URF)
July 22, 2025- A prisoner was being disruptive in a classroom. While being restrained, he resisted and spit at staff. A weapon was found in the prisoner’s area when packing up his property. Two other prisoners in the area were taken to segregation for threatening staff and incite to riot.
Macomb Correctional Facility (MRF)
July 23, 2025- An officer was elbowed in the face and bitten by a prisoner. The prisoner was being escorted after a hearing. Another officer reported hurting his knee when they fell to the ground.
Parnall Correctional Facility (SMT)
August 4, 2025- A prisoner threw a food tray through a food slot hitting an officer.
Marquette Branch Prison (MBP)
August 5, 2025- An officer was struck in the head by a prisoner during a hearing.
August 21, 2025- A prison counselor was choked unconscious and beaten.
Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility (WHV)
August 12, 2025- A prisoner spit on an officer’s arm and kicked another officer in the leg while being escorted to segregation.
Saginaw Correctional Facility (SRF)
August 17, 2025- There was an 11-prisoner fight in the chow hall.
Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility (IBC)
August 22, 2025- Two officers were assaulted when a disruptive prisoner pulled away while being placed in his cell. Both officers reported injuries to their wrists.
Thumb Correctional Facility (TCF)
August 22, 2025- An officer was assaulted when a disruptive prisoner pushed an officer.
