Crisis Fund

Every day corrections officers go to work and spend eight or more hours with inmates who have committed serious crimes. Officers risk their lives and well-being to maintain public safety no matter the cost. Because of this unwavering commitment to their jobs, officers are repeatedly injured in the line of duty.

And, like anyone else, they also deal with personal crises, such as cancer or losing their home to a fire.

In its more than 20 years, the MCO Crisis Fund has raised tens of thousands of dollars, which has helped hundreds of corrections officers make ends meet in times of catastrophe. Fundraisers are held year-round and include a Golf Outing in the summer and a raffle in the fall.

Do you know an MCO member facing catastrophe? Email MCO Treasurer Dave Pasche to ask the MCO Executive Board to help a member in need.

The Crisis Fund wouldn’t be possible without the contributions of individuals and businesses who care about corrections staff.

Eddie Dowell benefitted from the MCO Crisis Fund in 2023

In June of 2023, Eddie Dowell was coming into a curve when the back tire of his motorcycle hit pea gravel. The bike slid out from underneath him, and he was thrown into the road and ditch. He broke both of his wrists, his clavicle, all his ribs except two, messed up his ankle, endured a closed head injury and punctured a lung.

Eddie was in the hospital for fourteen days: eight of those in a coma. His recovery involved over four months of physical therapy. It was a very difficult time for him, his wife, and his children.

Still a little sore here and there, Eddie returned to full duty in December of 2023. While his motorcycle accident and recovery were trying for him and his family, he expressed his gratitude toward receiving a benefit from the MCO Crisis Fund. “It let me know that people really were thinking about me. It helped out with doctor bills. I was blessed to know that there were so many people out there that were in support. Officers at the facility also held a benefit. I was very appreciative. I felt blessed for all the help and everyone thinking of me.”
