May 5-11, 2024: Correctional Officers Appreciation Week

WHEREAS, the correctional officers who work in our correctional facilities dedicate themselves to keeping Michiganders safe every day; and,

WHEREAS, in a difficult environment that may become intimidating, aggressive, or even hostile, correctional officers are skilled professionals who utilize their training to maintain composure while preserving safety and property and restraining persons that may be a danger to themselves or others; and,

WHEREAS, these Michiganders are hardworking, committed public servants, and without their expertise and service, Michigan’s correctional facilities would be unable to operate as successfully and efficiently as they do today; and,

WHEREAS, correctional officers, in addition to their duties of ensuring safety and security within correctional facilities, actively engage with incarcerated individuals to support their rehabilitation and personal growth; and,

WHEREAS, during this week, we join with the Michigan Corrections Organization to recognize every correctional officer who serves in Michigan and thank them for the essential role they play in helping to protect the people of Michigan;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 5 – 11, 2024, as Correctional Officers Appreciation Week Michigan.
